Drama and Democracy : from Ancient Times till Today

Saturday 3 - Monday 5 March 2012

The Department of Greek and Latin Studies at the University of Cairo will host its 9^th biennial conference in March 2011 . Plenary lectures , presentations and papers will be held on campus in the Faculty's Conference Room . Accommodation and meals will also be provided on campus.

We welcome proposals for papers (20 minutes long followed by discussion) and coordinated panels (comprising either 3 or 4 papers) from graduate students, academic staff, or others interested in the ancient world on the topics suggested below . We are keen to encourage papers from a broad range of perspectives.

1- The Athenian Democracy , the Birth of Drama and its Development :

· Ritual drama .

· Tragedy .

· Comedy .

2- Marginalized People in Drama :

· Tragedy ( Attic Tragedy , Roman Tragedy ) .

· Aristophanes .

· Menander .

· Plautus and Terence .

3- Freedom of Expression in Roman Drama :

· Republic .

· Empire .

4- Drama and Revolution :

· Arab World .

· Non-Arab world.

Participants of accepted submissions will be notified by 1 December 2011 .

NB The languages of the conference are Arabic and/or English only .

Guidelines for Contributors

General editorial principles :

To be considered for publication, all submissions must be typewritten, with text, block quotations, list of literature cited, and notes double-spaced and in the same size of font.  There should be ample margins, and pages should be numbered.  Notes should be formatted as end notes. 

1. Transliteration of Greek, if used, should be limited to single words or phrases of two or three words; transliteration of longer phrases or of sentences should be avoided.  All Greek must be typed.  Greek proper names may be spelled in either the Greek or the Latinized form, provided that the form chosen is used consistently within the paper (except in quotations).
2. Quotations in any language that are longer than two lines of verse or several lines of prose should be presented as indented double-spaced extracts (block quotations).  Long extracts should be avoided unless the precise wording of the passage quoted is crucial to the argument.  Authors should incorporate all quotations smoothly into their own texts. Translations of longer passages of Greek or Latin should be included and the source(s) of the translations noted.
3. Italics should be reserved to distinguish words and phrases in foreign languages (including all Latin not in block quotations) and the titles of ancient works or modern books and journals.  The use of italics for emphasis should be avoided.
4. The author is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of all references to primary and secondary materials.
5. References to primary sources should be treated as follows:

(a)  In the body of the text, references should include, where appropriate, the unabbreviated name of the author, the full title of the work (in italics and with the first letter capitalized), and the book, line, or other necessary numbers.  Arabic numerals should be used throughout.  References must be inclusive, with first and last lines, etc., cited; "f." and "ff." should be avoided, e.g.:

Aeschylus Agamemnon 14-27, 100-106, 1125-30.

(b)  In parenthetical references and in the notes, the author's name and the title of the work should be abbreviated according to the list of abbreviations found on pp. xxix-liv of the Oxford Classical Dictionary³.

To prevent the accumulation of a large number of very short notes, references to primary sources that are not accompanied by additional remarks or citations should normally be given in parentheses in the text.

6. References to secondary literature should appear only in the notes and only as each item becomes relevant.  Classical Philology’s style of reference for secondary literature in articles is the author-date form of citation, with a list of cited literature at the end of the article; the style of citation in book reviews is the bibliographic style.  Authors of book reviews will find guidelines for that style later in this section.

Titles of journals are abbreviated using the American Journal of Archaeology list, to be found on its Web site (http://www.ajaonline.org), under “submissions,” supplemented by abbreviations as in L'Année philologique.

All page references must be inclusive.

2- ترسل اللجنة المنظمة للمؤتمر موافقتها على الأبحاث المشاركة قبل 1/ 12/ 2011 .

3- لغات المؤتمر هى : اللغة العربية واللغة الإنجليزية فقط .

4- تتسلم اللجنة المنظمة للمؤتمر الأبحاث كاملة من المشاركين فى اليوم الأول من المؤتمر مع قرص مدمج CD .

5- تعتزم اللجنة المنظمة للمؤتمر عمل جلسة خاصة لأبحاث شباب الباحثين من المعيدين والمدرسين المساعدين .

6- مدة إلقاء البحث لا تتعدى العشرين دقيقة.

7- تنشر الأبحاث في العدد الحادي عشر من مجلة أوراق كلاسيكية التى يصدرها القسم .
